5 Simple Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

The holiday season is filled with family, friends, warm nights in front of a fire and holiday decorations galore. But the holiday season is also a time for reflection, to give thanks and to give to others through acts of kindness. While running a charity 5K or volunteering at a local food shelter are great ways to give back to the community, we’ve listed some different ways that you might not have thought of.
  1. Leave a sweet treat with a note for your mailman or delivery person. Show the men and women who work every day despite traffic, weather, holidays and other circumstances some appreciation for their efforts by leaving a treat in your mailbox or by your door. Rebecca, a metro-Atlanta  mom, sets up a festive thank-you station by her door for the people delivering extra packages during the holidays. “Giving back is so important and somethingI try and teach my boys since it’s what my dad taught me,” said Rebecca. (Might we suggest one of these delicious recipes or including individual packs of peanut butter in your thank-you station!
  2. Call a friend or family member you haven’t talked to all year.Such a simple act can go a long way in someone’s mind. This will brighten their day to be able to catch up on life events.
  3. Sponsor a family. If you have the means, sponsoring a family is a great way to give back this holiday season. This can include sending handpicked presents or gift cards that will be sure to spread holiday cheer. Adopt-A-Family is a great organization that can help with this. Home for the Holidays Social Distancing Edition

This year has definitely been one for the books. As we get closer to the holidays, please make sure you take careful precautions. Celebrating virtually or with the people you live with is the safest choice this holiday season.

Use this quick check list to help direct your gathering plans for the holidays!

  • Check the infection rates in areas where attendees of the dinner live.
  • Limit the number of attendees.
  • Host the gathering outdoors, if possible.
  • Increase ventilation by opening windows and doors, or by placing central air and heating on continuous circulation. More information on increasing ventilation in your home can be found here.
  • Make sure people are sitting 6 feet away, even outdoors.
  • Wear a mask at all times, except when eating and drinking.
  • Avoid singing or shouting, especially indoors.
  • Avoid potluck-style gatherings.
  • Have one person who is wearing a mask serve all the food so that multiple people are not handling the serving utensils.
  • Use single-use options or identify one person to serve sharable items.

3 DIY Holiday Decor Ideas with Peanuts

If you’re in search of holiday decor that’s unique, sustainable, and budget-friendly, look no further than peanuts! Here are three DIY peanut decorations to try this holiday season:

Peanut Reindeer Ornaments
The shape and color of peanuts are perfect for these cute reindeer ornaments.
What you need:
  • Brown pipe cleaners
  • Wire ornament hangers
  • Small red pom-poms
  • Small googly/wiggle eyes
  • Peanuts (in shell)
  • Hot glue
Directions:
  1. Fold the pipe cleaners into antlers: Make the first fold about an inch from one end, then fold it back on itself about ½ inch in. Repeat, making the second fold just longer than the first (it should look like a lopsided M), then make a third fold the same size as the first. Squeeze the 3 points together and twist together at the base of the folds. Curve the long part of the pipe cleaner around in a U-shape and repeat the folds on the other end. Trim any excess pipe cleaner if necessary.
  2. Assemble the reindeer: Choose which way you want to orient the peanut “face.” Glue the ornament hanger to the back of the peanut. Once set, glue the antlers on top of ornament hanger (glue on the U-shape part between the antlers). Glue the eyes side-by-side on the top third of the peanut and pom-pom nose near the bottom.
